Meet Laura…
The belief that everyone CAN and SHOULD sing undergirds Laura's entire teaching philosophy. From birth until death, the voice is one of our primary vehicles for expression. With this in mind, Laura has taught hundreds of students, from ages 5 to 85, of varying experience and musical preference.
Laura has a gift for taking voice science and making it both an understandable and felt experience for the singer. Her tool box is large. At times she will directly communicate about the physiology of singing. At other times she'll use imagery, sensation, or even yoga poses to help singers feel and understand their own instrument. It is her belief that when a singer finds grounding in the physical instrument, it gives way to more accurate and confident communication elsewhere in life.
Laura holds a Master of Music degree in Voice Pedagogy and Performance from the Catholic University of America and a Bachelor of Music degree in Sacred Music (voice primary) from Westminster Choir College. Before committing to a full time teaching career, Laura performed regularly with the New York Philharmonic and traveled the world singing in both Europe and Asia. In 2007 Laura began work as a church choir director, and it was here that she found herself more often in the role of teacher than conductor. At the time she took on a few individual students and eventually founded LJDstudios in 2013. Laura has since committed herself entirely to a career as a private voice teacher.
Laura is also a designated E-RYT 500 yoga teacher, one of the highest certifications in the field. While yoga has always been a tool for Laura as a singer and voice teacher, she enjoys teaching yoga as an art in and of itself. Laura has taught hundreds of public yoga classes and trained new teachers in both Baltimore and Denver.
When Laura is not in the studio or on the yoga mat, you'll find her enjoying the Rocky Mountains with her husband, Sean, son, Wesley, and dog, Rory. A Colorado native, Laura is grateful to have seen the world, but happy to be home, doing what she loves most.
